TGIF Canceled for Feb 3rd
Dear Friends in Christ:
The T.G.I.F. program scheduled for this Friday, February 3rd, is canceled.
We have also received word this morning of the death of Mrs. Coretta Scott King today, following a long illness. We extend our Christian Love and Sympathy to the members of her family, and thank God for her continued witness for Justice and Peace over the years. Our Chancel Choir will dedicate their Anthem this Sunday, I Remember You, to Mrs. King’s memory.
Shalom, John

Sermon: “The Teacher”
A Sermon Delivered by The Rev. John D. Painter at Centenary United Methodist Church Metuchen, New Jersey
Text: Mark 1:21–28 Now after John was arrested, Jesus came to Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God, and saying, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near; repent, and believe in the good news.”
As Jesus passed along the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the sea–for they were fishermen. And Jesus said to them, “Follow me and I will make you fish for people.” And immediately they left their nets and followed him. As he went a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John, who were in their boat mending the nets. Immediately he called them; and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men, and followed him.

Dear Centenary Church Family:
It’s the fifth Sunday of the month, and that means we will be led in our 10:15 AM Worship service by members of our Centenary United Methodist Youth Fellowship. Our youth, under the guidance of Assistant Pastor Terrilisa Durham Bauknight and Advisor Scott Woodfield, have designed a special service of “Praise and Thanksgiving” for us to share together. We will sing many songs and hymns reflective of our praise and thanks to God. The youth have prepared a special children’s message, The Rocks Will Cry Out. We will receive the Word from Psalm 147:1-11 and Luke 11:1-4, and the morning Message will be a special dramatic (and humorous) presentation on Our Daily Prayer. Keeping with the spirit of the morning, our Chancel Choir, under the direction of guest conductor and organist Louise Chernosky, will sing Arise, Give Thanks, by Mark Patterson. Our Celebration of Found Coins will be designated for the Raritan Valley District Church Union.

Centenary United Methodist Church is a Christ-centered community of believers united in a common desire to grow in the knowledge, love, and joy of our Lord. We believe we are called to nurture one another in Christian faith so that we may be equipped for lives of discipleship, to proclaim the “good news” of Jesus Christ to all; to read and follow the teachings of the Holy Scriptures; to open to the ever-present leading and inspiration of the Holy Spirit; and to be in service to others after the example of Christ.

Text: Mark 1:4-11
My father loves movies, along with his wonderful sense of humor. On several occasions I have had the opportunity to watch old black and white movies, and by chance, an old-fashioned baptism. The minister in the movie walked down to the river edge, his robe perfectly white. The choir, congregation and baptismal candidates all walking in the bright sunshine, singing and praising God were not far behind.
