The Adult Education Class at Centenary United Methodist Church meets regularly from September through June, 9:00-10:00 a.m. on Sundays prior to Worship Service. Long-time Centenary member Bob Carlson, chair of the CUMC’s Education Committee, also serves as coordinator of the Adult Education Class and works with the Committee and Rev. Kwak to set the yearly curriculum.
The Adult Education Class draws on a variety of resources, including DVD presentations, books, periodicals and other printed materials as it looks at current and historical topics and issues related to religion and how they impact our daily lives. Guest teachers have been invited to meet with the class as well. Discussion within the group is always encouraged, and is lively, active, and informative.
In recent years, the Adult Class has looked at and studied a wide variety of topics, including the 23rd Psalm, the similarities and differences in religions and faiths that are practiced throughout the world, has utilized Pastor Rob Bell’s acclaimed “Nooma” series of DVDs looking at spirituality in our everyday lives, and has read and discussed award winning author Lee Strobel’s book “The Case for Easter.”
The 2010-11 Adult Education Class began on Sept. 12 with the continuation of Bishop N.T. Wright’s series “Simply Christian: Why Christianity Makes Sense,” the 10-week DVD course that the class started in the fall of 2009. On Oct. 3, the Adult Education Class began a six-week study of the Apocrypha. Assistant Pastor Rev. Terrilisa Bauknight is leading the classes, which focuses on the authors of 15 books and letters contained within the ‘section’ of the Bible, found in some versions of Bibles but excluded from others One of the main texts for the class is The Apocrypha by Edgar J. Goodspeed and Moses Hadas.
All are welcomed and encouraged to join the group on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. in the Sunshine Room for an always informative hour of study and fellowship.
