Summer Music Volunteers Being Sought: Again this summer, beginning at our 9:30 AM Service on June 28, we will have volunteers provide music during the Offertory. The selection needs only to be about two minutes and can be vocal, piano or instrumental of any kind (accompaniment, if needed, will be provided by Jonathan Benjamin, Jim Sabo or Steve Mosteller.) A sheet has been posted on the Choir Room door for you to choose your preferred week, or contact Shirley Mosteller.
Persons are invited to sponsor the time of coffee and refreshments following our Sunday Worship services. Please consider sponsoring a refreshment time and signing up for one of the many available weeks on the 2009 Refreshment Chart in the Narthex. Information on what you need to provide is available on the information sheet attached to the Refreshment Chart. Thank you for providing hospitality on a Sunday morning.
Flower Arrangements: Persons are invited to sponsor flower arrangements for our Worship services. A 2009 Flower Chart is posted in the Narthex. Floral arrangements cost $25.00 each week to sponsor. Information is available from our Flower Chairperson, Linda Serentino (732-940-2135) or by calling the Church Office. Thank you for providing these beautiful tributes for our Sunday services.
HEIFER PROJECT GOAL REACHED,
BUT FUNDRAISER CONTINUES
Thanks to your generosity, it was Christmas in June at Centenary. At our worship service on June 7, we probably were the only Christian church in America singing “Joy To The World.”
We had planned to sing that great Christmas hymn next December, but because of your generous giving to the Heifer Project Joy To The World special mission fundraiser, we surpassed our $1,500 goal in just three months—as you have seen, we have received $1,762.61 in support as of May 31—six months ahead of schedule! This means that Centenary will be sending nine animals—two sheep, four goats, one heifer, and two llamas—to impoverished families around the world to help them become self-reliant.
But we’re not done yet. Instead of declaring victory and closing the books, the Missions Committee has decided to continue the campaign until December, as originally intended. Whatever additional funds are raised over the next six months will enable us to donate additional livestock, perhaps even a water buffalo ($250), a pig ($120), or a second heifer ($500). Or, thinking even bigger, maybe even a second Joy To The World collection of another nine animals (for a grand total of 18!), if our campaign reaches the $3,000 level of giving. What a wonderful Christmas gift that would be from Centenary to the world—a gift that brings hope to 18 hungry families and the opportunity for a better life to the less fortunate!
Donating an animal to a needy family is truly a life-changing gift that goes on giving. As actor and Heifer supporter Joe Montegna says, “With the gift of livestock, hungry families can earn a livelihood for their families. The gift of self-reliance is a gift of hope and dignity for the people who need it most.” The Missions Committee thanks all of you for your wonderful support of this project. —Robert Carlson
Volunteers In Mission 2009 Trip
October 31, 2009 to November 7, 2009
Are you willing to give some of your vacation/spare time to join the Centenary VIM Team this year?
We are going to Goldsboro, North Carolina, to work in the United Methodist North Carolina Conference. Some of us will pack UMCOR, ZOE and NC Conference Kits in their warehouse, and some will go into the community to work on disaster recovery, repair and rebuilding construction projects. There will be opportunities to sew outfits for Haiti, book bags and tote bags for school kits; file; sort; answer phones; enter computer data; to list a few jobs that continue to grow.
We need to begin to plan for the Trip and must have our VIM Team identified before everyone leaves for vacation for the Summer. So—June 30th is the deadline for making an initial commitment to your Mission Committee. Our last trip to Argentina we had 14 volunteers—we are hoping a greater number will come together for this time. The cost will include $20 per night for housing and an undetermined amount for food (we will do our own shopping and cooking together so whatever menu we decide for each meal will determine what it will cost us to prepare it). We will decide together what transportation method we will use.
If you have any questions please call me at 732-463-1431,
or find me on Sundays after Service. —Glenna Gundell, Mission Co-Chairperson
ANNUAL WALK FOR HOPE TO CURE BREAST CANCER
On Sunday June 7th, five members of the Centenary UMC “TEAM SPIRIT” participated in the 8th Annual Michelle Offsie Memorial Walk for Hope. (TEAM SPIRIT members: Giselle Esquivel Cordero, Kristen Cordero, Dee Gillet, Jodi Mochel & Emily Mochel) The event consisted of a two-mile trek down Grove Ave from the JCC in Edison to the Neve Shalom Temple in Metuchen, and back. The event was held to raise money to support the City of Hope’s breast cancer research, treatment and education programs. Also, Centenary UMC was one of the “corporate sponsors” for the event.
To date, Centenary members, friends and families have donated a total of approximately $250.00 (in addition to the $300.00 sponsorship donation from our general Mission Funds), and the Walk of Hope organization has raised over $100,000 for City of Hope Hospital due to a surge in day-of-event participation and donations, with the final total to be much higher.
City of Hope is one of only 40 National Cancer Institute-designated Comprehensive Cancer Centers nationwide and a founding member of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. An independent biomedical research, treatment and education institution, they are a leader in the fight to conquer cancer, diabetes, HIV/AIDS and other life-threatening diseases. Their park-like campus just northeast of Los Angeles, researchers advance ideas into discoveries, physicians bring emerging therapies to patients, and students learn to transform the landscape of modern medicine – all supported by the generosity of philanthropists from across the country.
TEAM SPIRIT would like to thank everyone for your prayers and for your support to this great organization. Your support plays a critical role in funding City of Hope’s breast cancer research, treatment and education programs.
Donations will continue to be accepted until July 7th, the cut off for all funds to be submitted to the organization. Please make your check payable to “City of Hope” and send it to Dee Gillet, 111 Martin Terrace, Woodbridge, NJ 07095. If you wish further information, please contact Dee Gillet at 908-380-0946. —Dee Gillet

Vacation Bible School—“Rome”—July 27-31: Strap on your sandals for fun, adventure and God’s love—in Rome! The children will explore a crowded Roman market place, tiptoe past Roman guards, encourage Christians in an underground church and visit Paul for daily discoveries about Paul’s life.
Rome…where the Bible comes to life! Race a chariot, try on a toga, and experience the power of Scripture and the courage of the early church.
Rome…where the Apostle Paul is your Bible teacher. Each day you will visit Paul’s cell, soaking in Scriptures as Paul shares what he’s writing and applies it to kids’ experiences.
Vacation Bible School will cost $15.00 per child. Registration forms have been sent to children who have previously attended VBS. If there are children that have not attended before and would like to do so, they may call the Church Office for a registration form at 732-548-7622.
